Are You a Wing Nut?

Did you know... I am a "wing nut?"

*** "Wing nut" is an American political term used as a slur referring to a person who holds extreme, and often irrational, political views. According to Merriam-Webster, it is "a mentally deranged person" or "one who advocates extreme measures or changes : radical."***

At least, that's what one of my ex-FB "friends" who unfriended me lately said.  Why did she unfriend me?  Because, I recently requested that those who are unable to have intelligent discussions around important issues and reference verifiable facts, rather than spew outrageous, and sometimes false, politically controversial statements on social media, do so immediately.  So, she did.

I consider it a positive move for both of us.  However, I wonder if she realizes a) she admitted she is unable to have an intelligent and rational conversation, b) she is unable to agree to disagree, and c) she doesn't want me to call her on it when she is touting false statements on social media.  So... Who is the "wing nut?"  Hmmm...?

It truly is a topsy turvy world we live in where fantasy/fiction belief is accepted as truth and the "moderate" position and fact-based analysis is considered extreme.  If you agree, you may be a "wing nut" too!😊

    1. Couldn't agree more, Rich. However, some nuts are securely fastened to the bolt, while others are dangerously loose.😜

  2. I have had several people unfriend me on FB, and have been banned from several pages and forums because I have used intelligent discourse, and facts which they were unable to refute, so they called me a wingnut, or teabagger, or some other "derogatory" term and banned me or unfriended me. I take that as a good thing, meaning I won the debate.

    1. Those who resort to name-calling or otherwise shutting the door on the conversation have nothing substantial to say.

  3. Did you ever participate in high school debate teams? Did it ever disintegrate into name calling? No, because each side had researched facts and prepared logical arguments. When a person resorts to name calling it is the first sign that they have no logical facts to back their opinion

  4. Absolutely, Kim! Couldn't agree more. My guess is those who resort to name calling never participated on their HS debate team.
